Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg along with fellow student roommate of Computer Science, namely Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. Facebook membership was initially limited to Harvard University students only, then expanded to other universities in Boston, Ivy League, and Stanford University. Gradually, Facebook began to open up to students at other universities, before it opened to high school students, and ultimately to every person aged at least 13 years.
MySpace
For three consecutive years, from mid 2006 until 2008, MySpace is a social networking site popular in the U.S.. But in mid-2008, according to comScore, MySpace top position internationally was taken over by its main competitor, Facebook. MySpace headquarters located in Beverly Hills, California, USA, now employs 1,000 employees. Quantcast estimates in May 2011, visitors still MySpace per month in the U.S. reached 19.7 million.
"hi5"
hi5 is a social networking site based in San Francisco, California. The company was founded in 2003 by Ramu Yalamanchi. In 2008, comScore reported that hi5 has become a popular social networking ranked third after Facebook and MySpace, according to the calculation of the amount of regular visitors per month.
In April 2009, Bill Gossman appointed as CEO at this company. Since then, hi5 update the concept as a social site based gaming. hi5 was opening up for new game developers. Gaming industry veteran, Alex St. John, joined hi5 as President of the Company. In 2010, hi5 acquired social gaming company Big Six. Quantcast reports, hi5 has 2.7 million visitors per month in the U.S. remains, and 46.1 million at the global level.
"Orkut"
Orkut is a social networking site owned and operated by Google Inc.. The name 'Orkut' is taken from its creator, Google employee Orkut Buyukkokten named. Although Orkut is not very popular in the U.S. compared with similar competitors like Facebook and MySpace, but Orkut is one of the most visited sites in India and Brazil. According to Wikipedia, 48 percent of Orkut users are from Brazil, followed by 39.2 percent from India.
Orkut was founded in California, USA. However, in August 2008, Google announced that Orkut will be fully managed and operated in Brazil by Google Brazil. Orkut in Brazil headquarters stationed in the city of Belo Horizonte. Netlog was founded in July 2003 in Ghent, Belgium, by Lorenz Bogaert and Toon Coppens. In 2009, according to Wikipedia, Netlog has 42 million registered users. On Netlog, users can create their own web, expanding social networks, publishing music files, videos, post blogs and join the group.

Habbo formerly known as Habbo Hotel. Habbo is a social networking site aimed at teens. This site is owned and operated by Sulake Corporation. According Wikipedai, Habbo was founded in 2000, and has since expanded into online communities 11. Habbo users spread across 150 countries. Chirp is the text of any posts containing a maximum of 140 characters displayed on the user profile page. All users can send and receive Twitter via the Twitter website, compatible external applications (cell phones), or through short messages (SMS).
Twitter is based in San Bruno, California. Twitter itself was founded in San Francisco. Twitter also has servers and offices in San Antonio, Texas, and Boston, Massachusetts. Since its creation in 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Twitter has gained popularity around the world, and currently has more than 100 million users
